Biography
Credentials:
BSc Mathematics, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, 2019
Research/Career Interests:

I am interested in cetacean ecology, behavior and conservation. While I have a background in passive acoustic detection and mathematical modeling of diseases, I am now switching gears to study satellite tagging and stable isotope analysis of humpback whale skin samples in the North Pacific as a member of the Whale Habitat, Ecology, and Telemetry (WHET) Lab. I have particular interests in whale social behavior in relation to ecological niche, the use of satellite tagging technology, and stable isotope analysis.

Professional Preparation:
NSF Graduate Research Fellow, Oregon State University, 2021-present
NOAA Contractor - NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center, Protected Species Branch, Passive Acoustics Group, Woods Hole, MA, 2019-2021
Undergraduate Researcher, Biomath Fellow - Cáceres Lab, University of Illinois, Urbana, IL, 2015-2019
Omura's Whale Project Member, Research Assistant, 2017-2019
NOAA Hollings Scholar - Omura's Whale Project, Northeast Fisheries Science Center, Protected Species Branch, Passive Acoustics Group, Woods Hole, MA, 2017

Academic Interests:

Liam is currently working on his master's thesis, using stable isotope and satellite tagging data to study the movement and feeding ecology of humpback whales in the North Pacific. To aid in this, Liam recently graduated from IsoCamp (class of 2022), a world-renowned short-course on stable isotopes in the sciences. In addition to his recent work with stable isotopes and tagging, Liam also has a background in passive acoustic analysis of baleen and toothed whale vocalizations and anthropogenic noise. Looking forward, he is interested in all things cetaceans with a focus on conservation, and is excited to learn even more about the different ways we can gain a greater understanding of these incredible creatures, and how we can better protect them.

Liam is currently serving as the the Hatfield Student Organization Webmaster and FWCS Graduate Student Association Faculty Representative.
