Research/Career Interests:

I am interested in many aspects of pinniped ecology including population dynamics, movement and distribution patterns, vital rates, and behavior and reproductive life history patterns.  I have worked with pinnipeds (harbor seals, California sea lions, monk seals, Steller sea lions) since 1990, primarily using VHF and satellite telemetry to study movements and dive patterns, brand resights to estimate dispersal, distribution patterns, and vital rates and digital photography to collect and archive images of branded and entangled sea lions. We are currently installing a remote imaging system to collect behavioral and reproductive life history data of Steller sea lions.

Working at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, I was involved in the development of the juvenile Steller sea lion above water capture technique and have participated in the capture, handling, processing, and release of several hundred juvenile Steller sea lions.  I am very interested in improving capture and handling techniques to safely capture wild Steller sea lions to remove entangling marine debris.  Combining innovative disentanglement techniques, outreach, and education can reduce injury and mortality of Steller sea lions.  These efforts can further be applied to other marine species to reduce the overall amount of marine debris in the ocean.
