Hector's dolphin - large view

Associate Director Scott Baker and PhD student Becca Hamner were in Cloudy Bay, New Zealand, working with colleagues to collect genetic samples and individual identification photographs from Hector's dolphins. The research is intended to improve methods for estimating the abundance and for understanding the extent of movement or isolation between local populations. Hector's dolphin are endemic to New Zealand, where their numbers have declined due to fisheries-related mortality.
